Mid-Summer Madness – Session 9

Working on the same project 9 days in a row is tough. It reminds me of when I worked for a living. I’m certainly going to thank the labor movements of the early 20th century for pension plans and retirement. Also, if you enjoy having a weekend, that’s another benefit from the “liberal” labor movements.

Anyway, I couldn’t bear to do any more work on the Dark Elf spearmen – I needed a break. I primed the next unit, another spear unit, and then to my delight I saw them, a unit that would be a challenge to paint: daemonettes!

Across all of fantasy literature whether Forgotten Realms’ Drow, DragonLance’s corrupt Dark Elves, Games Workshop’s Dark Elves or other works, there is one thing Dark Elves have in common. While skin color and settings all vary – Dark Elves have an affinity for demons.

Why are there demons in my Dark Elf army? Well many years ago Games Workshop ran a massive campaign where the armies allied with Chaos mad a push to overthrow the inhabitants of the Old World. It was called the Storm of Chaos and had its own supplement book (which I no longer have, I think). There was a Dark Elf Witch Queen, Morathi, who turned to Slaanesh and raised a Dark Elf Cult of Slaanesh Army and then set out to conqure Lustria. This was a Dark Elf army that could take Slaanesh demons as troop types.

I have never liked the Games Workshop color schemes for their pasty white skinned Dark Elves and demons. In my dreams and nightmares, demons are always dark. For these daemonettes, I decided to use the Reaper Dark Elf Skin triad as the base. The colors are best described as a purplish gray.

I completed the base coats on a single model and am pleased with the result so far. I decided the armor bits should be brass and the small amount of clothing should be white.

In all, I spent 3 hours on the project today, bringing the total to 28 hours.

Let me know what you think about the daemonettes – do demons have a place in a dark elf army?

  1. Looks great! I like your color scheme better than gw’s. I think I still have Storm of chaos around here somewhere. And why not have demons? My Roman army has them. 😀

  2. Ahh, the joys of not working and having free time to hobby. Sadly, my experience with this was due to a Covid layoff and 8-months of no work! I understand what your saying about working every day on the same project. While I got hobby stuff completed, I did have to change up projects!
    BTW, love the skin color!

  3. I am a big fan of such variant army lists, and there has been a link between Slaanesh and Dark Elves from the beginning in the Realm of Chaos books. Looking forward to seeing your forces grow!
