From the Painting Table 2024 – Week 2 [NSFW]

Warning! Once again there are Amazons in this post and the brazen little hussies scoff at the notion of wearing clothing. Not to be outdone by their Southern cousins, some Nordic Valkyries have also opted to leave part of their wardrobe in Valhalla. Therefore, this post has to be rated NSFW, Not Safe for Work.

Goliath Ganger

Another beefy guy from the 1st Edition Necromunda boxed set from Games Workshop. These are perhaps the very definition of mono-pose plastic figures with the only choice the right arm. Painting one is like a palette cleanser between courses at a fancy dinner.

Stargrave Crew 2

Completed crew woman number eleven of this set from North Star. Used a 3D-printed head to make the figure a bit more interesting.

5150 Characters

The 5150 science fiction series from Two Hour Wargames are miniatures agnostic, meaning you can use figures from any manufacturer. However, a few companies have produced miniatures fitting the descriptions of some of the characters. Here’s two from a small commission I’m working on. If you want to know where to get them, you’ll have to ask Ed at THW, because I don’t know.

The first is one William Bishop Pinkerton, a.k.a. Billy Pink. A short note about painting black – you should rarely use pure black. You should always use a black with a little brown, green, blue, red, yellow, or other color mixed in. Why? To differentiate different textures and lighting.

The second one is Mr. Big, a big-mouthed bully underworld criminal boss, kind of like someone in the news only Mr. Big’s skin is pink instead of orange and Mr. Big doesn’t sport a comb over.

The note about black also applies to white. You should seldom use a pure white in painting. Again, a white with a tint of other colors adds depth, texture and definition to a figure. In the pictures, the jacket is a warm yellowish white (Colonial White from Cuttlefish Colors) and the shirt is actually a light gray (Experiment 626 from Cuttlefish Colors).

Shield-Maidens

This week saw the completion of a few more Viking shield-maidens from Wargames Foundry.

Valkyries

Wargames Foundry has a couple of packs of Valkyries in their Vikings range. These mythological women look as though they’ve stepped out of a Wagnerian opera or from the sketch book of a fantasy artist such as Boris Vallejo or Larry Elmore (not quite curvy enough for Frazzetta, though).

Amazons

Closing this week’s painting are a pair of Amazon archers I think these are the last two of the archers from Eureka Miniatures. The thing about Amazons is that whenever I think I’ve painted the last one, twenty more are found in a box in the back of the closet.

Summary

Fifteen figures finished this week which brings the total to twenty-nine figures for the year. Let’s hope I can keep on target. In breaking down the categories, I decided the Valkyries should be placed in Fantasy and not Medieval.

  • 7 28mm Science Fiction figures
  • 5 28mm Amazon figures
  • 7 28mm Fantasy figures
  • 10 28mm Medieval figures

I hate sounding like a broken record in repeating that your comments and suggestions are always appreciated, but truth is, they are appreciated.

I just realized that we are entering an age where there are some who have no idea what the phrase where “sounding like a broken record” means.

Responses

  1. Nice work! Love the comment about painting blacks, I will generally start with a German Panzer Grey, but I have mixed blue and green into pure black on occasion. I need to remember this tip for future miniatures!

  2. FYI – Mr. Bad Example has just been misunderstood.
