To Be King
It’s October and Victrix is having a sale on its Viking, Anglo-Saxon and Norman figures to celebrate the battle of Hastings, which was fought in October of 1066. And I started out with the intention of doing the three major battles which resulted in the Normans conquering England. But, as usual, I got sidetracked into something that grabbed my interest and attention a great deal more. Here’s what grabbed me:
“What follows is the recreation of a great Viking saga, a tale of war and greed, of statesmanship and political ineptitude, of treachery and heroism…. It has pretty much everything: titanic battles between two mighty warriors and their armies, an arch-traitor who in the end got his just deserts, a woman who was the ultimate survivor and became queen to two different husbands…. In classic Viking tradition there are massacres, the martyrdom of archbishops and the ruthless extermination of enemies. And this saga has one particular virtue to commend it: all the above actually happened.” – page 37, King Cnut and the Viking Conquest of England, W.B. Bartlett, 2016
Have you watched the NetFlix series “Vikings: Valhalla”? Well, though the series is entertaining, it is so wrong in so many, many ways.
Command Group
This week I painted the figures for the command stand of one of the armies.

First is a pesky priest.

Next, we have the standard bearer:

The unit is actually an unit of Huscarls, so here’s a huscarl:

Finally, comes the Commander-in-Chief, Edmund “Ironside”, a.k.a. King Edmund II. He wields a long sword which once belonged to King Offa.

Cat Girl
In Five Parsecs from Home, one of the crew options is a Feral. Ferals are “humanoid-animal hybrids, typically patterned on Earth predators such as wolves or large cats. Originally engineered for military purposes, they are considered an independent species in United Space.” The Stargrave Female Crew set from North Star Military Figures has a cat girl head on the sprue, so I made a Feral to use in my Five Parsecs from Home crew.

Rebasing
I continue to rebase figures from the old square bases to round ones. These figures are all from Reaper Miniatures.

I still have hundreds of figures to paint. Just when I get the pile of unpainted figures down to a manageable size, I start a new project. Does this happen to you?
Let me know, your comments and suggestions are always appreciated.
