Once again, a post has the NSFW, Not Safe for Work, rating because one young lady is topless. The ancient writers tell us that women in battle would expose a breast to allow men to know that she who could bring life into the world could also take it out. The probable truth is that ancient artists as well as today’s artists knew cheesecake sells.
These figures are from Bronze Age Miniatures, the Barbarian and Northmen ranges. I had bought 28mm female barbarians and gladiators in the past, but the sculptor has replaced the older sculpts with 32mm figures. After purchasing one of the 32mm figures a couple of years ago, I decided she was too big and put her in the bits bin. I’ve been experimenting with different techniques to achieve better skin tones, so I pulled her out to paint and discovered 32mm isn’t much larger than today’s 28mm which are actually 30mm. So, I ordered a few more to paint.
The figures in the Barbarian range are 32mm and are head and shoulders taller than figures sculpted in the 90s and early 2000s but are only slightly taller than today’s sculpts. The figures in the Northmen range are about 30mm and fit very well with today’s figures and only slightly taller than earlier figures.
The Northmen
I’ve already decided two of these figures will definitely be in my next WHAT campaign.

The Barbarians
The Barbarian range pays homage to the sometimes over the top art of Frank Frazzetta, Joe Jusko, Boris Vallejo, Julie Bell, and others. And yes, I had to paint the male as Conan and the female in the chainmail bikini as Red Sonja.

Summary
These figures were a joy to paint and David at Bronze Age Miniatures also has an E.R.B. John Carter of Mars range that is very tempting.

Well, these six figures bring the year’s total of painted figures to 312. I know it’s well shy of the goal I had at the beginning of the year. This exposes one of the real downsides of getting old – my brain still thinks I can do things I could do when I was 30. My body, on the other hand, has to take more naps, pee breaks and really thinks my brain is nuts.

The three ‘Northmen’ figures are stunning, great sculpts and well painted .
