There’s the old saying about March that it comes in like a lion and leaves like a lamb, meaning that it is usually a windy month that settles into a peaceful spring. This year, the lion roared all month long and brought rain and hail with it.
You would have thought being forced indoors I would have painted a lot of figures and played some games, but rainy weather induces naps, which I have grown fond of as an afternoon activity.

Andalusian Nobles
With my interest in the 11th century conquests of England, first by Canute the Great and then by William the Conqueror, it is hard not to look at what was happening in Spain where a young Rodrigo de Vivar was on his way to becoming a legend as “El Cid.”
Andalusian noblemen were just as armored as their Spanish knight counterparts but used different tactics on the battlefield.

Vikings
I continue to slog my way through the large number of figures I need for both the 1015 and 1066 Viking invasions of England.

Fantasy
Though primarily a historical miniatures company, Wargames Foundry often includes a little fantasy in some of its historical ranges. They do have a few historically accurate shield maidens in their Vikings range, they also have a couple of packs of the mythical Valkyries tucked into the range.
I also finished a long out of print Citadel dark elf.

Colonial Africa
Finished a Sikh NCO serving in the British Army in Africa.

Science Fiction
And finally, I painted two sci-fi characters, a space elf from Hasslefree Miniatures (I think) and one I bought from Annie’s bargain basement at Bad Squiddo Games.

Summary

I completed 21 figures in March bringing the total for 2025 to 84.
- 3 – 28mm Science Fiction figure
- 17 – 28mm Colonial Era figures
- 4 – 28mm Old West figures
- 25 – 28mm Medieval figures
- 7 – 28mm Fantasy figures
- 18 – 28mm Amazon figures
- 7 – 28mm Animal figures
- 3 – Terrain pieces
That wraps up the month of March with two exceptions – One, I’ve decided to participate in a Paint-Along League with Doug from the 2+Tough YouTube Channel beginning April 1st, so expect to see posts as I finish a batch of figures; and second, most importantly, the series Frieren has come to NetFlix.
If you haven’t seen Frieren, you should, the art is fantastic and the story is timeless, on par with Tolkien and in my opinion, better than anything written by George R. R. Martin.

Response
Have you read The Long Ships by Frans G. Bengtsson? A really interesting Viking novel set around 1000 AD. The hero is involved in wars in England, Scandinavia, and Spain on both the Viking and Andalusian sides (“There is no God but God and Jesus is his prophet.”) They made a movie with the same name based on a couple subplots and minor characters starring Richard Widmark. I used to do a one person Viking movie festival over Christmas vacation, just sitting there all day, eating popcorn and watching Viking films.
