Preparing for Texicon – Part 3

Texicon is now 70 days away. Miniature painting is well under way & will have more than enough miniatures for the game. I’ve completed the native village of 4 huts & have started building the jungle terrain.

The one part of the hobby that I absolutely hate is assembly work. Whether miniatures with small fiddly parts or constructing terrain, I just don’t like it. I get glue everywhere & it is hard for me to get it to go together just right.

I have a lot of old CDs left over from the day when AOL sent one nearly every month & from magazine inserts & from old old software. I’ve glued the CDs to 3/8″ thick styrofoam & to foamboard. I then shape the foam & glue the terrain features to it. Here’s the first one with a towering 7″ tree:

I figure that if the terrain CDs are touching or nearly touching, that would denote impassable terrain. If the CDs are two to four inches apart, it would represent difficult or rough going.
I now have a native village of 4 huts; two mud huts & two domed bark huts. The huts are resin from Old Glory Miniatures.

Next are some animals. You’ve got to have animals for a safari, right?

PEF Markers! When PEFs were first introduced, most of us just used dice to represent them. Then Bob Minadeo made PEF markers out of startled birds minatures & other wild life. And then, Litko began making all kinds of tokens. In the aquarium section of a pet store I found a bag of pink plastic Barbie high heels to use in my 5150 games.

So with all of that, what is the best PEF marker for a safari game???? COCKTAIL MONKEYS!!!

For only $5 & some change, I got 72 monkeys. Plenty for PEF markers & the occasional Mai Tai. So I got an idea to use some of them as souvenirs for the gamers. At Michael’s, I found some clip on flowers. Clip on flower plus cocktail monkey plus glue gun equals a wearable souvenir!apr18_50
Your charming game hostess will be wearing this one!

Well, I’ve got to get back to work so I came make this game session happen. If you are at Texicon, drop by and play. You might find a “rare flower” or end up in a cannibal’s stew pot.
