Looking Forward – 2023 Goals

It’s the end of the year and I’ve spent the last week and a half taking a look at all of the material I’ve accumulated over the years and trying to decide what I would like to try to get done next year. For those of you who don’t know, I’ve actually been scaling back the size of my hobby. I’ve been quietly selling off some of the unpainted and partially painted miniatures in my collection. I use the consignment services of Metalhead Minis, run by the marvelous painting guru and instructor (and friend) Lyn Stahl. But I digress.

The miniature tabletop gaming hobby has several different genres, periods, factions, scales, paints, crafts, and games. When you are young, you think you can do it all, especially if you are a maniacal scatter-brained Floozy genius. I have often gone off in several directions at once and have often failed to get very far. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve enjoyed every twist and turn along each path.

There is an old saying, from scripture, “the end of a thing is better than the beginning.” I think for this next year I’m going to narrow my focus, do a deeper dive and, hopefully, get more things done.

Focusing Is Hard

All right let’s talk about attention. I once had a medical professional tell me that I probably have attention deficit disorder but being a bit more intelligent than the average bear, I was able to hide it (and self-medicate with a bit too much booze). You may be thinking I’m bragging about how smart I am, but I have such a deficit of common sense and understanding as to how to function. Anyway, it is hard for me to focus on things over a long period of time.

My focus for 2023 is going to be on fantasy and the jungle:

  • I want to bring the Mistress of Time (Zhu Paand & Fizzrelda) series to an end.
  • I want to play out the Iron Queen’s War map campaign.
  • I want to paint up all of the jungle terrain and animal miniatures I got from Acheson Creations.
  • I want to refurbish all of my existing jungle terrain.
  • I want to write and play Colonial Adventures encounters with the Azande.
  • I want to play a WHAT/Pathfinder hybrid campaign set in the Mwangi Expanse.
  • I want to be healthy and drop-dead gorgeous at my oldest granddaughter’s wedding in December.

Anything else I do hobby wise will be a one off and hopefully there will only be one or two.

What Does This Mean?

It means science fiction, cyberpunk, Napoleonics, World War II, the Seven Years War, ancients, the American old west, and Saturday night benders will be put on hold. Why? Well, the Floozy has to get healthy, get in shape, find a fabulous dress, and be there for my family in December. (I may even learn a K-Pop dance routine or to twerk.)

This whole short post was the ravings of a madwoman saying she’s going to be doing a butt load of fantasy in 2023. Of course, a fist full of Benjamins could get her to change her mind, I mean a big fist full of Benjamins.

What are your plans for the coming year? I hope 2023 will be a good year, heaven knows we need one. Your comments, suggestions, projections, and prognostications are always welcome.

  1. First, I think the word you are thinking of in the second paragraph is not “several,” but “multitudinous.” And, yes, we want to do all of them, in great detail, with non-combatants, scenery, obscure units and weapons, and appropriate dice, measuring devices, and dice towers, a bespoke gaming table, and lots of period paintings on the walls.
Second, doe 2023 I am actually getting off dead center and doing a Mycenaean Greece/Trojan War scenario. This has been a long road, initially conceived in the ’80s. What is finally coming out is a skirmish game, about what the folks back home are doing while Agamemnon, Odysseus, Menelaus and the rest are off fighting before Troy. It is inspired by a painting from Pylos called the Tarzan Fresco, and I am looking at using the predecessor to WHAT (I don’t have WHAT) and having a file commander/leader of ten militia/sergeant equivalent as its focus, rather than Agamemnon or one of the other great Homeric heroes. I fear I’m getting rather proletarian in my old age.

  2. Good luck on the gaming focus for 2023! I am hopeless; I never make plans as I know I will get distracted 🙂 However, I hope to continue to play through campaigns with the recent THW Quick Play titles. I got all 5 and have done Pulp PI and in the middle of a 5150NB campaign.

  3. I just found your blog today via a circuitous route – I arrived via an image of Minairons Milicianas you had painted a few years back – have you dumped the SCW in the intervening period? I hope not!
I think I have even more different periods and genres than you, my one saving grace is I have been too poor/mean to buy loads of stuff and then not get it painted, so my “lead pile” is pretty minimal.
Good luck with sticking to all your plans, you sound like an interesting lady to know – now I have found your blog, I will try to pop back every now and again to follow what you are up to.
