From the Painting Table – June 11

Tribal Farmers

In addition to armed resistance from trained warriors, the European expeditions also encountered local farmers pressed into service by their chief. Often these men didn’t even own weapons and were issued spears by the chief or village headman for the battle at hand.

Someday I hope to play games again, but for now I’ve got a lot of painting to do.

Your comments are always appreciated. Let me know what you’ve been working on.

I decided my natives were east African and so gave their bands names in Swahili. Usually, this involved using my computer to translate an English phrase, like “Red Shields” into Swahili. Well, it sounds good, anyway, and very exotic.

While I was painting African natives, explorers, and Arab traders, I also took the opportunity to visit the Martin and Osa Safari Museum in Chanute, KS. The Johnsons spent years in Kenya and Tanganyika filming the wildlife and natives. Among other things, their films show rituals and dances of the natives, which have since been forgotten, so the locals are very interested in getting copies of the film to help them reconstruct their culture.

  2. Our que for painting seems to never end. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ve had to force my painting to the side just so I can play a few solo games. Not ideal, but gets the desire to paint “faster”, so back to the painting table…it’s a never ending cycle. I’ve a Love-Hate relationship with this hobby of ours.
